From his earliest memory Nino has held a passion for dogs. Always searching for a true NATURAL Guard dog.
He was the first to introduce the Cane Corso to the UK. He has also had experience with German Shepherds.
After many years of experiencing, studying, and training he was always left disappointed in the performance of supposed guarding breeds to guard independently. Following further research livestock guardians kept reoccurring into the picture as a suitable breed which would work supposedly independently.
While researching these breeds, he soon realised that all LGDS did this naturally against predators, but very few did so against man.
During one of his many journeys to explore the subject he came across www.pastoredellasiacentrale.it
He then took his search to the north of Italy, high in the mountains of Cuneo, to meet Ezio Maria Romano, President of The F.i.C.G to study his work in this field.
It was apparent that this man had spent many years studying and understanding guard dogs and was far ahead of Nino in finding the ultimate independent guardian for family and territory. What was very interesting was his selection process.
All LGDS guard against predators (wolf, fox, strays etc) and all have a natural instinct to guard their territory, but only a small % will see man as threat. From his vast experience, a selection can be made from a litter to establish whether they will guard against Man.
In my opinion, a good example of a working LGD selected to independently guard his territory and family is:
For males 50/65 kg max
Female 40/55 kg max
Unlike show type LGD which are often very large dogs with less stamina and agility. Selection should not be for colour or size, but judged by ability to guard!
My choice LGDS (live stock guardians)
LGD (live stock guardians)

- Suitable for cold and hot climates.
- Trustworthy with the family, a trait obtained by thousands of years of selection.
- Communicates well, lets you know where you stand and what he is thinking.
- A great deterrent but if selected well will fiercely deter an intruder.
- Needs management not training, this is an independent self thinking Guard Dog. That’s why they will guard while we sleep and they don’t need commands but need to be selected by an expert.
- Not suitable for every one.
- Their best environment is a large garden with suitable fencing, small holding, farms. Not suitable in my opinion to urban areas.
Other Breeds I had experience with are the German Shepherd, the Italian Cane Corso. In my opinion both breeds are more suitable for Personal Protection and to live in an urban area. They work better under command and train well, that’s not to say that you can’t find one that does it independently, but in my opinion it’s harder to find.
OUR MISSION is to select a dog fit for a job.
A Natural Guardian must have certain instincts.
DISTRUST and a desire to protect there TERRITORY are 2 instincts that are essential.
Having experienced many breeds, in my opinion, the breeds that seem to have kept those instincts are LIVE STOCK GUARDIANS.(That’s not to say you can’t find one in other breeds.)
There are many breeds in this category of LGDS.
Central Asian Shepherds (sometimes referred to as Alabai, CAO or Ovcharka). Kangal also know as Turkish Mastiff, Anatolian Karabash or Akbash the Caucasian Shepherd and the Maremma. To name but a few.
My choice presently is the Central Asian Shepherd, mainly because much work has gone in to the selection of individuals within this lineage over many generations. But we are always evaluating other breeds of LGDS.
So if you are looking to have a dog that fits the pedigree standards of size, colour or the type or for the show world don’t waste your time with me.
If on the other hand you want a Natural Guardian that will FIERCELY DETER AN INTRUDER then contact me and I will be happy to help you select a dog fit for purpose.
Also important to understand, the type of dogs we select are best suited to live outside together with a companion. Preferably with neighbours not too near, as they will bark a lot when the need arises.
If you need a PERSONAL PROTECTION dog, I will be happy selecting the right one for you.
If all requirements are met and you would like one of our dogs please call Nino on 07956 589059 Or email ninoloraso@yahoo.com to arrange a meeting or to visit us.
